The romantic legend of the origin of the Marauise cut for a diamond dates back to the 1840s, when French King Louis XV commissioned a jeweler to create a diamond in a new shape to represent the charming smile of the Duchess of Pompadour.
After the hard work of the jewelers, combined with the shape of the lips when the king's lover smiled in the portrait, the Marauise cut was created and named after the Duchess.
